Section 5 - Etiquette and School Rules

The Martial Arts Bow and why it is done

Every student of the KickFit Martial Arts Schools is required to demonstrate the two most important martial arts movements, attention and bow. The attention stance symbolises discipline. A strong self-discipline is the foundation upon which good character is built.

The second most important movement is the bow, this symbolises respect. Respect for yourself and others is critical for a peaceful society. When you see students and instructors bowing to each other this symbolises three things:

  1. I respect you
  2. I will not hurt you
  3. I trust you.

When you arrive at your school, you should stop just inside the entrance, bow and greet the instructors with “hello sir, hello ma’am” at the end of your class just before you leave the school, bow and say “goodbye sir. Goodbye ma’am.” The reason for doing this is to get ready to do your best in class and demonstrate a Black Belt leadership attitude.

Parents should also bow with their child. This will help them to learn to demonstrate the attitude that you want them to have here at the Academy, at home and at school.

Parents should stay and watch class for at least the first month of training. This will give you a great insight into how the class is run and the benefits your child is receiving from the martial arts program at KickFit Martial Arts Schools.

Can I watch the class?

Parents, visitors, friends and family are encouraged to watch classes. We only ask that you respect the class by remaining quiet and that if you are bringing younger children that you keep them quiet and under control. Parents, if you are unable to stay and watch classes, we ask that you come into the Academy and bow together.

Please drop your children off only a few minutes prior to the class and pick them up immediately following class. The school becomes very busy around class times and we cannot be responsible for watching unattended children who are not in class.

Parents are asked not to talk to / coach their child during the lesson. We have found that students perform best when they focus solely on their instructor during the lesson.

What if I arrive late for class?

If you arrive late for class; pull your attendance card, stand at the back of the class until the instructor has seen you. Approach the instructor, bow and hand in your card.

Where do I put my shoes?

Shoes should be left in the designated shoe rack. Outdoor shoes may not be worn on the training floor. No shoes are allowed on the training floor. The ground, pavement, and car park outside of the school are filled with bacteria and germs. Your shoes could carry these germs and bacteria onto the floor. As an added precaution, you should bathe or shower before each class, being sure not to walk around barefoot before your class.

What is the Student Creed and Principles of Black Belt?

Training at the KickFit Martial Arts Schools is based on the Student Creed and Principles of Black Belt. This martial arts philosophy inspires every student to always do their best and resist negative peer pressure. Students, parents and visitors to the school should stand in silence whilst the Creed and Principles of Black Belt are recited:

  1. I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that could reduce my mental growth or physical health.
  2. I intend to develop self-discipline, in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
  3. I intend to use what I learn in class constructively and defensively, to help myself and others and never be abusive or offensive.

Meaning of Student Creed for children

  1. I will not smoke or take drugs and eat a balanced diet avoiding too much junk food. I will try to attend martial arts twice a week for physical fitness. At school I will try my best and always listen to my parent’s and “obey cheerfully”
  2. Self-discipline means to do the “right thing at the right time”
  3. I know when I can use my martial arts; when a stranger attacks me, training at the dojang, at home when I practice with my parent’s permission. I will try to treat everyone I meet the same as I would like to be treated

Our goal is to help every student achieve the level of Black Belt and beyond in the martial arts. The Principles of Black Belt is a reminder of how we should act inside and outside the dojang:

“As a dedicated student of the martial arts, I will live by the principles of black belt: • modesty • courtesy • integrity • perseverance • courage • indomitable spirit”
