KickFit Frequently Asked Questions

Section 1 - The Uniform

In the Korean language, the uniform is called a dobok (doe-bok). The basic white uniform represents a beginner student (it is symbolic of ). Every part of your training at KickFit Martial Arts Schools involves discipline. Wearing your uniform correctly is part of this martial arts discipline.

What is the correct way to wear the uniform?

This should be kept neat, tidy and odour free. Your uniform should be clean and pressed before each use. Your appearance not only reflects on you, but also on your school and classmates.

Keep your uniform in good condition by removing any stains and repairing any tears which may occur. Sleeves and trousers may be taken-up to provide a more comfortable fit. For your own safety the sleeve hem should be no longer than the knuckles and trousers hem should not drag on the floor. The top may be worn tucked in or out depending on personal preference.

You may only wear a t-shirt of the same colour as your suit underneath it. Women should also wear a sports bra of the same colour underneath their top. Please do not wear sweatshirts or school clothes underneath the top.

Should I wash my belt?

Belts should not be washed. This is part of the martial arts tradition. A student would start with a white belt and over the months and years of hard training the belt would change colour eventually ending a black colour.

What is the correct way to tie my belt?

The belt should be tied around the waist with no twists; both ends should be the same length. Most students will wrap the belt twice around the waist. On occasion it may be necessary to wrap it three times or once around. All students should be able to tie their own belt after the first two weeks of training.

1 Hold the belt in your right hand, about 30cm from the end
2
Put the belt against your belly button, with the short end hanging down
3 Wrap the long end of the belt around your waist two times (make sure the layers are not twisted)
4
Take the end of the belt which you have just wrapped around and push it up behind both layers of the belt
5 Use this end to make a loop with the end hanging down
6
Tie a knot and pull both end to the side, so that the knot sits in the middle and both ends are the same length

How do I earn the stars and badges for my uniform?

The KickFit is committed to helping its students achieve their full potential through the martial arts. Little Champions and Junior students can earn the following badges during their training. All reward badges should be sewn on the upper arm of the left sleeve on the jacket.

BELT TYING
Basic students can earn this badge at the start of their training.
BRING A BUDDY BADGE
This badge can be earned by bringing a friend or family member to take part in “buddy day”.

A completed buddy form must be handed to an instructor before buddy day.

MONTHLY ACTIVITY BADGE
This is awarded to students who complete the activities listed on the Activity Form, on a regular basis.
AWESOME EFFORT
This is awarded to students who improve their work at school. This could be for an outstanding piece of academic work or for an improved school report. Please show the piece of work or report to an instructor.
READERS ARE LEADERS
The ‘Readers are Leaders’ badge will be awarded to students who read ten age appropriate books (younger children unable to read yet can earn the badge if someone reads the books to them). Just pick up a book list from the front desk. When the list is complete return the list to an instructor.
COMMUNITY SERVICE BADGE
The “Community Service” star is awarded to students who do something to benefit the community (i.e. raise money for charity, help clean up a park, etc). Blank community service forms are available.
SPLITS CLUB
Good martial arts skill requires practice in the dojang and at home. Good flexibility helps these skills to develop. After a vigorous warm-up for at least ten minutes, students are encouraged to practice for the splits club with either box or side splits. To earn the badge, students must inform an instructor before the start of their lesson that they wish to try out for the club.
KICK BADGE
Repetition is the mother of skill.’ This badge is awarded after 1000 repetitions of the same kick. Practice is done at home in sets of 25 kicks (sets of 10 kicks for younger children). To qualify, fill out the kick form with your practice dates. The badge can be award, once a parent has signed the form.
HIGH KICK BADGE
The badge can only be earned once the ‘splits club’ badge has been earned. To earn the badge, students must perform ten of the same kick to their head height. To earn the badge, students must inform an instructor before the start of their lesson that they wish to try out for the club. The badge may only be earned during a ‘B’ lesson.
OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE
We encourage students to strive for long-term improvement. This badge is awarded for outstanding improvement in the martial arts during a belt grade cycle, improvement in schoolwork over a term, or improved attitude at home over a belt grade cycle. An instructor will award this badge at his or her discretion.
